Karle Wilson Baker: A Writer's Life.
FoHNI members and the public were invited to a one-woman show to benefit the next bronze sculpture of the Friends of Historic Nacogdoches, Inc. Linda Thorsen Bond brought to life the writings of Karle Wilson Baker, based on research by Sarah R. Jackson. Baker received more recognition and honors than any female poet in Texas. She taught contemporary poetry at SFA from 1924-1934 and wrote "The Texas Flag Primer," "Two Little Texans," "The Birds of Tanglewood," Pulitzer Prize-nominated "Dreamers on Horseback" and Book of the Month Club selection, "Star of the Wilderness. As a charter member of the Institute of Letters, the Poetry Society of Texas and the Philosophical Society of Texas, she was the first female named a Fellow of the Texas Institute of Letters. Her first four books were published by the Yale University Press and she was awarded an honorary Doctorate of Letters by the Southern Methodist University in 1924.
The 2012 performances were Thursday, May 17th at 6:30, Friday, May 18 at 7 p.m. and Saturday, May 19 at 2:30 and 7 p.m. at Cole Art Center in downtown Nacogdoches. Tickets were $15 each and benefited the Friends of Historic Nacogdoches' historic sculpture project.
